Conjunctive use is the coordinated use of both ground and surface water resources to maximize the availability of both. In wet periods, surface water will generally be the preferred water source, and excess surface water may be used to recharge underground aquifers. During drought periods when surface water is scarce, a greater reliance can be placed on ground water to meet consumptive needs. The Front Range, with substantial ground water resources, is increasingly looking to conjunctive use as a way to optimize their water supplies.
